Synopsis:
Hijos de las Nubes, la última colonia is a documentary directed by Álvaro Longoria and produced by Javier Bardem that analyzes the situation in Western Sahara. The film made an undeniable impact, winning the Goya Award for Best Documentary Film and the CEC Medal, as well as screening at major festivals such as the Berlinale, TIFF in Toronto, and the San Sebastián Film Festival. In this production, animation is used as an educational tool to synthesize often labyrinthine geopolitical events, converting complex data into a direct and poignant visual narrative.

The Challenge:
For this project, we worked side by side with illustrator Aleix Saló. Our challenge was to translate his iconic style, characterized by a satirical and direct stroke, into an animated narrative that required dynamism and clarity so as not to distract from the documentary’s political message.

Our work focused on post-production and animating the vignettes, bringing rhythm and life to Aleix’s illustrations. We used motion graphics not as mere decoration, but as a narrative resource to guide the viewer through historical events in a seamless way. We prioritized a clean visual language where the simplicity of movement complements the harshness of the story and makes denser concepts easy to understand. In this way, the animation bridged the gap between the rigor of journalistic investigation and the author’s highly personal style.
