Books that collide and come to life: LUEE puts visual magic in “Mashups Literaris de Ciutat Maragda” by 3Cat Cultura

What would happen if the characters of a classic of universal literature crossed paths with the universe of a contemporary novel? This is the premise of Mashups Literaris de Ciutat Maragda, the microformat of 3Cat Cultura hosted by cultural journalist David Guzmán, where impossible encounters and completely new hybrid stories are created.

At LUEE Animació we had the pleasure of beeing on charge of all the production associated with 3Cat for this project. From filming and sound to the soundtrack, post-production and, obviously, illustration, composition and animation.

Translating literature into the language of cartoons and cinema

The mashup concept comes from music (mixing two different songs to create a new one), but bringing it to the literary field required a very powerful visual effort. Our work in the studio has been to take David’s narratives and translate them into a visual language strongly influenced by the world of comics, illustration and cinema.

Each episodel is a true creative puzzle:

• Graphic homage: We adapt the art style and aesthetics to do justice to the classic and contemporary authors that are mixed in the story.
• Animation and composition: We give movement to the illustrations so that the transition between the two literary works is understood as an organic, dynamic whole full of references and nods to the readers.
• Own sound universe: We design the soundtrack and sound effects to complete this immersive atmosphere.
• Craft from scratch: For us, “Mashups Literaris de Ciutat Maragda” is the ideal playground for experimentation: we mix techniques, play with the textures, different editing, and demonstrate that literature can also be seen through the eyes of animation.
